Abstract

The accurate attribution of names, titles, epithets, and genealogies of Hadith narrators is essential for the proper understanding of Hadith literature. Diacritical marking plays a crucial role in preventing mispronunciations and errors in reading and writing these names, ensuring their correct interpretation. For this reason, Hadith scholars have emphasized the importance of memorizing these names, acquiring them from experts, and studying works dedicated to their correct vocalization. Some scholars authored specialized works focused on the diacritical marking of the names of hadith narrators. Among them was the renowned Hadith scholar Shaykh Muhammad ibn Tahir al-Fattani al-Gujrati (d. 986 AH), a prominent Hadith expert from India. He authored the seminal work Al-Mughni fi Dabt Asma' al-Rijal, which remains one of the most valuable and influential texts on the subject. In this work, Al-Fattani meticulously applied diacritical marks to the names of Hadith narrators, their genealogies, titles, epithets, and attributions. This study offers a methodological and critical examination of Al-Mughni fi Dabt Asma' al-Rijal, exploring key themes that underscore the importance of diacritical marking in Ilm al-Rijal, one of the most esteemed disciplines within Ulum al-Hadith. The researcher adopts inductive, descriptive, and critical approaches. The inductive method was employed to gather and trace relevant materials, the descriptive method to outline Al-Fattani’s methodology, and the critical method to assess the strengths and limitations of his work. Through this study, the researcher has reached several conclusions, the most important of which are: Al-Fattani was among the foremost scholars of Hadith in the 10th century of Hijrah, and Mastery in the art of identifying names, epithets, titles, and genealogies is an essential skill to avoid errors in reading and writing them, and Al-Mughni stands out as one of the most significant works authored in this field and is distinguished by numerous unique features.
